9 days until I head out...

Details...Details...Details!

Over the last week I have compiled a list of gear that I will be taking with me.  Cover that in a minute.

It is odd to pack for a trip on a motorcycle.  I have been on many road trips in cars and trucks.  With them you don't have many space limitations and weather isn't really a factor on how you pack.  On the bike I am very limited with space and weight.  Not to mention everything is out in the open and must be waterproof.

Another  thing to think of is reliability.  Motorcycles only have 2 tires.  Have a flat in the middle of nowhere and you could be in for a long night.  An out of tune motorcycle can quickly foul the spark plugs.  I only have 2 cylinders.  Foul one of them and it could be a long night.  These 2 items alone account for alot of space and weight.  I have a tire repair kit and a 12v air pump (thankfully my wife found a very small air pump that will do the trick if needed).  Also have a tool kit that includes spare spark plugs, fuses, etc.

Today I packed all my gear into the 2 waterproof bags I mentioned yesterday. Then packed both bags along with my Nelson-Rigg sissy bar bag and sleeping bag onto my bike.  Time to get a feel for how it will be organized and how comfortable I can make it.  It will be a long ride so comfort is going to be REALLY important.

Here is what I have packed so far:   2 long sleeve t-shirts, 2 short sleeve t-shits, 2 pair of pants, 1 pair of shorts, 1 sweatshirt, 1` Carhart chore coat, 1 pair hiking boots, tool kit, first aid kit, survival kit,
spare gloves, spare goggles, spare ear plugs,  rain gear, sleeping bag, 3 light sticks, air compressor, camera, fleece beanie, fleece neck gaiter, duct tape and para cord.  I still need to pack my shaving kit, flip flops and a couple other small items.  These will wait until next weekend.

I am very happy with the way it worked out.  The bags stack onto the passenger area of the seat and provide a nice backrest.  I took the bike for a spin around the block to see how it will work out.

So far...so good!
